San Ramon Regional Medical Center
For my internship, I shadowed an Emergency Room nurse at the San Ramon Regional Medical Center.
Week One:
Tuesday, May 15: Today, I met the nurse I'll be shadowing this week and next. Her name is Catrina and she's super sweet! Even though I'm not allowed to have any patient contact, since I'm a minor, I still feel like I learned a lot. I did basic office work like filing papers and making copies of admission forms. I also bagged sterile urine sample cups to restock the restroom and bundled together the blood test tubes. Since I couldn't have direct contact with the patients, I observed what Catrina did. I saw the way she interacted with patients and I got to see her do the charting too. It was so interesting!
Thursday, May 17: Today was my second day of shadowing Catrina in the ER and today was more interesting by FAR. Two suicidal patients came in today, one in an ambulance! He had tried to overdose on pills in a park and was brought to the ER and put on a psychiatric hold. It's a pretty quiet ER, so nothing else particularly interesting happened today. It's not the main ER hospital in the area, so it doesn't seem like it gets busy very often.
Week Two:
Tuesday, May 22: I mainly cleaned beds and put together admission packages today. It's not exactly what I was hoping for with this internship, but observing what I want to do for the rest of my life has really taught me a lot. Seeing the nurses put in IVs and take blood and put information into the charts about all these different patients has really opened my eyes to what nurses do all day. ER nursing is something I've considered, but I'm really considering it now!
Thursday, May 24: Today was my last day of interning and it was really quiet. I filed some papers and just sat around for a while. Guess that means people were healthy today!
